There seem to be a lot of babies out and about these days. Well, so far, not many are actually out..but definitely about. So, when I saw the new Storybook Woods baby bonnet pattern by Alicia Paulson, I had to have it.

I wanted to use some of the fabrics that we have even though the prints don't really lend themselves to embroidery. For the first one I used our new Anna Maria Horner In the Clearing velveteen and a some grape shot cotton. For the boy hat I used some vintage flannel and Eleanor Grosch Lions.

Who new that pressing hams would be such good bonnet models?

Queen of pastels

Speaking of pastel suits, do you know who has rocked the pastels for decades? The Queen of England. I have never seen so many pastel suits on one person, but by gum she always looks great in them.

I love this parfait of an ad campaign for Louis Vuitton.

It really makes me want to track down some pastel tweeds or light wools for some early spring ensembles. I'm always ready for full on Spring colors by March, however, the weather in KC isn't ready until almost June. This might be my answer. I was able to find a couple of options for a sunny spring coat. Over on Denverfabrics.com there are some lovely boucles and gabardines. I'm going to run down to Kaplan's as well..they always have lovely things.

Gumdrop in the house, yo.

You may recall a couple weeks ago I posted about a house cat that we found and named Gumdrop. Obviously an indoor cat, Gumdrop showed up on our porch and made a home on our glider. Since we are crazy cat people we of course fed him and made a shelter for him, all the while hoping to be able to adopt him out, or better yet, find his owner.

Well, Friday night, after a trip to the vet to make sure all was well with Gumdrop, J caved. He decided that while we wait to find him a home, or his owner (we put out 150 fliers this weekend! door to door!) that Gumdrop should stay inside. Which is all well and good, but try explaining that to Marla our cat. I had, in my heart of hearts, hoped it would turn out like this...

But instead, Marla was like this:

For the time being Gumdrop has been barricaded to two rooms of the house, but eventually we will have to let him wander. Unless, fingers crossed, our fliers work and he can be reunited with his owner. Or, of course, if one of you are feeling the need for a new cat!

Brussels' flower carpet

So, Brussels has just sprung to the top of my "must see" list. See the picture above? That is the parking lot in front of the Grand-Place and it is covered in a carpet. Made of flowers. Let me repeat that, MADE OF FLOWERS. Begonias to be precise.

E. Stautemans was landscape architect who started experimenting with flower carpets in the 1950's. He realized that the carpets would be an excellent vehicle to show off his favorite flower, the begonia. In 1971 he designed his first carpet for Brussels. There have been many since. (See them all here)

The 2012 carpet will be unveiled August 14th. I won't make it this year, but someday I would love to see it.

Betty Boyns

I wandered over to one of my favorite interiors site, Living Etc. just to browse their kitchens and the first one that popped up was this one. Not only is it charming and cheerful, but J and I bought that tablecloth in Cornwall! The company is called Betty Boyns and the designer, Paula Nicholls takes inspiration from her childhood in Cornwall. Although the designs definitely remind me of Cath Kidston, I think there is a big enough difference that they can live well together.

This is a line that I've been thinking about trying to get for the store. Is anyone else as interested in it as I am?

Simon Doonan's Capri

This weekend I bought Simon Doonan's new book, Gay Men Don't Get Fat. I actually got it yesterday so I haven't plowed through the whole thing yet.(I was distracted by the Golden Globes) Anyway the book, as is Mr. Doonan himself, is fabulous and witty and yes I did laugh out loud a number of times. In his first chapter he discusses the glamorous Isle of Capri. I thought since it is Monday, we might all want to take a mental trip to Capri. You don't even have to run out to buy a new bathing suit!

Here is Simon Doonan actually in Capri. With him is his husband Jonathan Adler, and Trina Turk and her husband Jonathan Skow. It is from a Travel + Leisure article about Capri from S.D. Maybe we will run into them on the beach?

We will be vacationing with Jackie Kennedy, & Babe Paley. (Giant sunglasses a must)

Perhaps we will meet them for lunch under a yellow and white stripe umbrella?

Followed by a relaxing boat ride.

And a little fishing


Then we will retire to our room at J.K Capri

Emmy-Ray flowers

On Tuesday there was a photo shoot at my house. I spent the whole day frantically ironing, fluffing pillows and dusting. Lucky for me Emmy-Ray set me up with some gorgeous flowers. And of course, I had to add some pink and gold ribbon.

(J thinks the flowers smell like honey, I just love the luxury of these voluptuous bouquets all around the house. )

Liberty fabrics up close and personal

The good news is that these fabrics are all lovely, personable and fun to invite into your drawing room. The bad news is that the price of beauty has gone up. Way up. Where these were once $36, they are now $39.50. And that isn't even close to what they should be priced, but we don't want people to be unable to buy them.

It's a shame I couldn't be obsessed with muslin. That would be so much easier on my bank account.

Plastic bag holder

One of the projects that has been on my list forever is a plastic bag holder. As much as we take our re-useable bags shopping with us we always seem to have a slew of plastic grocery bags at home. In a big exploding pile.

So, the other day I finally took the bull by the horns and made one. It took maybe 15 minutes? It's funny how you put things off and it turns into a huge deal in your mind. And then you are done in a snap. So, if you've got a spare 15 minutes and an exploding bag problem, I recommend making a plastic bag holder.

Of course you can make it an size you want, mine is roughly 10x30. I cut out two rectangles at this size.

And stitched up the sides using 5/8ths inch seam

I folded over each edge a 1/2 inch, then another 1/2 inch and stitched.

And ran elastic through both ends.

I cut a long piece for the hanger, pressed each raw edge in the middle and folded it over one more time. Stitch up the side and your strap is ready.

Stitch the strap on one end of the bag and you've got a plastic bag holder!

LIving Room Inspiration

So, it turns out that if you want to really kick out that New Year's/house tidying up/resolution list you should invite a publication over to take pictures of your house.

J and I spent the weekend spackling, painting, sewing, cleaning and generally trying to make the house look nicer than it normally does. Which, by the way, is exhausting. On the other hand, almost every stupid little project that we have been putting off is done. After tomorrow I can rest on my home upkeep laurels.

Until, of course, I decide to tackle that whole sofa slipcover project. Maybe I can make that a February project.

Every once in a while this weekend I needed to stop and look at other people's houses for inspiration. For that I turned to Living Etc. and their galleries of homes. Here were a few of my favorites..

Showing Off..

Today I'll be doing a little showing off, as I have achieved total happiness because of two shipments..
The first one came late afternoon yesterday. I had a class coming in, so I didn't really get to pet it like I wanted to..Behold 6 new bolts of Liberty of London!

I ordered these last April and so had no idea what they would look like. I was happy in the decisions that past-Betsy made. Closer and more individual pics coming soon.

Today the UPS man brought me a little Christmas gift that I bought myself. (Well, ordered for myself using a gift card from my awesome aunt). I saw this in London, and oh I wanted it. However, what's one of the more awkward things to drag on a plane? A sewing basket. What is the coolest sewing basket ever? A GYPSY CARAVAN sewing basket. From Cath Kidston.

Really, isn't this the cutest thing ever?

And I treated myself to a new bag, since mine are in rough shape. This was E and I's favorite, and since everything was on sale, why not?

I'm going to go swath myself in Liberty and look at my stuff. Then maybe I'll have lunch. Then maybe I'll do some sort of work. Although, BORING! Ooh, maybe I'll make stuff with the Lib..that's kind of work, right?

High Society by Villa Nova

Until recently, when someone would mention "high society" I would picture this:

Have you seen High Society with Grace Kelly and Bing? Good, but no Philadelphia Story, which it was based on. Anyway, that's not the point of the post...

Now, when I hear High Society, I think of the home dec collection by Villa Nova. It is a mid-century inspired collection with fabric & wallpaper, and it comes in a whole slew of colorways. I love the pear colors with the light greens, blues and creams.

The Cherry colorway is nice too...

But I love the berry. This one really caught my eye in my Living Etc. Of course a red, berry, chartreuse fabric will always catch my eye. One trick pony, that's me..

Gumdrop

So, you may or may not know that J and I have turned into crazy cat people. As long as we have been in our house there have been a slew of neighborhood cats that we've fed, tried to keep safe, get fixed, and try to adopt out. Most of the cats are definitely feral, and although they like us (hey, we have the food) they aren't inside cats. But then Gumdrop showed up on the porch a couple of weeks ago. (We call her Gumdrop because of her tiny head on a Huge body.)

Gumdrop is obviously an inside cat. All she wants is to be petted and she yowls at the door and window to be let inside. (Which, by the way, is really heartbreaking). We've called around and listed her as a found cat, but no one seems to know about her. Perhaps she was abandoned? I worry about her being outside especially because her two front feet are declawed.

Anyway, she's on the blog in hopes that someone in KC might know of her owners, or might want to adopt her. She really is a total lover and I'm guessing would live her life quite happily on a cushion inside. Anybody recognize her? Or want to take her in?

Whale Watch Hat made by E

Sneaky E was busy this holiday season...knitting me a hat for Christmas! She found this Whale Watch hat out of the book New England Knits. She used some of my favorite colors and made the hat even better by adding a big pom-pom on top. Which, by the way, totally makes this hat.

Excuse the sunglasses by the way, J wouldn't take the picture without them on. So I look like a C.H.I.P.S officer wearing a whale hat.

Santa brought Steve Madden

This year Santa brought me the ultimate gift; blue and pink suede platforms. Oh, they are lovely and so tall! Although, as E is quick to point out, even with these shoes on I'm not as tall as her on flatfoot. Grrr.

Unfair sibling height distribution aside I think they are gorgeous. One problem. I went to put them on for New Year's Eve and lo and behold..what to wear with them? Could I do black? I never subscribed to the Royal Blue trend (once something is your high school colors, it really loses any cool factor thereafter)

Pink of course is an option, and I have meant for sometime to do a lovely loud print dress from this Martha Negley fabric. But I wonder if it is too fussy for the shoes. Hmm..

Any ideas for me?

Ray Eames

J and I watched the documentary Eames the architect and the painter on This American Life the other day. (Thanks PBS!) It was an all around great movie, but two things really stood out to me. One of them was the perhaps underrated (possibly just in my mind) rose of Ray Eames.

I loved that they really showed her background and role as an artist and how she was such an important cog in the Eames machine. Ray had a background in Abstract Expressionist painting and had studied under Hans Hoffman. This gave her an eye for color and the ability to make a static tableaux dynamic and alive with just that right tweak.

And of course she designed gorgeous fabric, which endears her to me.

Kudos to you Ray Eames!

Oh, the movie is available on Netflix, if you are interested...

Laurent fabric from Sandberg

Oh, how I am lusting for this fabric. I need it, I must have it. I will have to save a lot of $$ or it though..and actually don't have a set project in mind for it. (although when has that ever stopped me buying fabric??) I first fell for it in the October issue of Living Etc.

The light background is pretty, but I have my heart set on the black. Come to think of it, I have been looking for fabric to do some Roman Shades in my living room, and the white would work for that. Hmm, I wonder if J would go for cakes on his window. But the black just pops, doesn't it?

This is upholstery weight fabric from Swedish company Sandberg. It's name is Laurent and it is from the Engla & Elliot collection. I've only found it for sale here, for $81 a meter. Which is why I really need to figure out my project before I buy.

Nick of time

Speaking of projects being finished, I stopped dragging my feet and finished my Empty Bobbin tree skirt 2 days before Christmas. I actually had to move all the presents out from under the tree and then replace them on the tree skirt. I could have let it go until next year, but couldn't face the shame of not finishing it (which of course, only took another hour). Now I'll be set for next year!

I used Alexander Henry buttons, Kaffe aqua shot cotton and some red/white dot Polly Danger bias tape.

2 hour apron

Yesterday when I made my year-end list of things to do, there were actually three lists. Home, Work, & Projects. Work was the biggest and most daunting so I ignored it. Home involves a lot of paint, so couldn't be worked on. But projects! I'm speeding through that list! Granted, they are stupid little things that either needed one more hour to finish, or didn't take that long to begin with.

For example, poor J needed a new apron for when he does the dishes. (Because not only do I make him do the dished, but he had to wear a Hello Kitty apron. Sad) So, "Apron for J" has been on my list forever. I started it yesterday and 2 hours later, finished! (I used the Lotta Jansdotter reversible apron from Simple Sewing, Heather Ross guitars, and Kaffe nut brown shot cotton).

Blank Slate

Christmas is over. Sigh. We had so much fun, did you? I hope so! I always look forward to this week between Christmas and before New Year's. It's fairly quiet at the store and we can turn our attention to subjects that had been pushed aside during the holiday frenzy.

I've got a blank notebook and a pencil from Buckingham Palace. With Royalty at my side, I think I can get 2012 wrangled out before the new year...

E and I were at the Elle Fashion weekend (Did I tell you about that?) the night before we were leaving and we randomly found a booth selling the most gorgeous felt cake headgear. I of course left with the chocolate cherry cupcake fascinator (above) as well as a tiny straw hat.

But we couldn't leave their brilliance behind and ordered some for you as soon as we got home. I think they are worth the wait. I can tell you that I am never happier then when I have a cupcake on my head.

At the supermarket the other night my eye was caught by the Talenti Gelato. The packaging really stood out in the freezer aisle. J thinks it looks like a paint sample jar. We gazed at the rows of gelato, commented on the price (over $5!) and right before we walked away we grabbed the Belgium Milk chocolate. Because who doesn't want expensive gelato when it's 20 degrees outside?

Oh it's good. It's smooth and extra creamy and has a really strong chocolate flavor. Also, Talenti is 100% natural. It's gluten free, hormone free and doesn't contain any high fructose corn syrup. Doesn't that make you feel better about buying a container or two?

By the way, just in case you want to run out and get some (which I recommend) I found it at the Hen House in Fairway. And next time, I'm totally going to try the Sea Salt caramel.

We had a nice article run in Star Magazine this weekend about Lusterbunny jewelry (and how they are great gifts!). The star came in with a model and we had a little photoshoot in the store, where I piled our favorite samples on her! I helped by holding the fabric in the background.

Chunky scarves and patterned coats already pack a punch, but adorn them with unique brooches for a brilliant fashion statement.

“Accessories can add a little bit of color to what can be a drab time,” says Betsy Blodgett, co-owner of Bon Bon Atelier in Westport. “Picking a chunkier pin to stand out against winter wools and knits is probably a good idea.”

Blodgett is a fan of accessories with a woodland theme. She says anything forest-inspired, especially the image of an owl, is chic and cozy during the cold months.

So, you know how we went to England? Well, whilst there we made secret notes on merchandise for the store, and when we returned we made a flurry of orders. Some things we have already gotten and some we put on the backburner. But there are two jewels that we have been waiting for, and this was the biggest bad-daddy of them all...

Liberty of London fabric bundles!!

See, when we are in Liberty I saw these lovelies and had to buy one. Because there is a whole variety of prints in each pack! They are color coded, so each print works together, and they are all 52" long by varying widths. (Perfect for an easy quilt) The package I'm holding has 11 different prints in it.

So, I found the lady who makes them, and she agreed to send us a shipment. Although, she had to ask because the only other store that carries them is the Liberty Regent Street store. Bam! Just us and Liberty..aren't we fancy?

The bundles are $85.00, and we only have 10. (And if you don't get here soon-ish, they might all find their way to my house) They aren't online yet, but if you see one you desperately need for yourself (or as a gift!) just call us.

The Party Dress

For the last 48 hours I have been single-minded, every minute thinking of only one thing. The dress I am making. For I have found the perfect dress pattern, and it has come to me in the form of this book, The Party Dress by Mary Adams. Her's is a simple pattern, true, but the way she uses color and ruffles and petticoats has gone straight to my heart. So, I am making one of my own. Which needs to be done by Saturday night (J's office Christmas party).

All I have left to do is insert the lining, the zipper and hem. And although I have been triumphant so far, there is the high chance that disaster could happen and I could end up curled on the floor tonight in a quivering mass of despair. When it is done there will be pictures, although when you come to the store tomorrow for the open house (you are coming, right?) I'm sure I'll be in the back room frantically trying to finish. Or if all goes well I'll be twirling around in it. Because did I mention there is a petticoat involved? White and gold tulle? Glittery??

Buy this book and become obsessed like I am! To be perfectly honest we just sold the last one, but I have three more coming in next week. I'm happy to put your name on one if you like!

Open House! Again!

Did you know that we are having a Holiday Open House this Saturday? I know, I know, we are a little open house crazy lately, but this one is extra sweet. Why? Well, because the first 10 people in the door will get an incredibly delicious cupcake from Dolce Bakery!

Sorry it's been so quiet around here this week.. I've started working on a last minute dress that I'm trying to get done for Saturday. Mental note...start before Wednesday next time! However, I'm hoping it turns out as cute in real life as it is in my mind. Because in my mind it's adorable! I can't wait to show you. There is a lot of tulle involved..so it has to be cute, right?

In the meantime, we have new stuff in! The latest issue of Selvedge Magazine, some new Lulu Thai Needleworks by Anna Maria Horner and some gorgeous Amy Butler laminate. (I am in looooove with the pattern in the laminate)

I have to admit that over the last few weeks I have spent ample time thinking about this book. Most of the things I sew are apparel. I especially love making coats and skirts, and of course, I use the fabric and patterns that we carry. This book however really re-opened my eyes to what sewing can really be. Making totally unique and beautiful garments. It's so easy to get lost in a sea of cottons, but I think it's time to dip my toe into taffeta and silk. And, tulle. So much tulle. And maybe so sequins. Mmm, sequins.

Miss Piggy is launching a new MAC line! It is but a wee line consisting of false eyelashes, liquid eyeliner and a light pink eyeshadow. I wish they would have done more, don't you? I'll definitely check it out though, it arrives November 14th.

Polly Danger bias tape

I am so excited because we received our first shipment of Polly Danger bias tape! And they are so cute...I want to bias tape everything I see. This bias tape is all handmade. It is pre-shrunk and features reinforced stitches at all seams. Polly Danger never uses a bias tape machine, she cuts, folds and presses everything by hand. Which means that it is carefully inspected and beautifully made. We have 12 different patterns available, come on in and check them out!

Holiday window

E and I are ridiculously pleased with our Holiday window this year. We have transformed the front of the store into a fluffy, glittery room complete with a sparkly ballet costume dancing through some knitty snow. Because that's what the holidays are all about, right?

The pictures don't do the sparkle nearly enough justice, so you will have to come in (or even just drive by) to see. We've designated this lovely front room as our couture room. It is where all our gorgeous books on Lanvin, Chanel, and Vionnet are living. They are rubbing elbows with the amazing Christian Lacroix stationary that is dominating the table. All in all, a lovely room to be in!

We are nearly ready for the Holiday Hop this weekend! Currently, the store looks like a tornado hit it, but that is what happens when you tear down and rearrange all the furniture. I can't wait for you to see our holiday window display for this year, it is my favorite ever!

Remember, the Holiday Hop runs this Friday and Saturday. We will be open until 7 on Friday with goodies, so if you can't make it during the day you can come late.

Olle Eksell

I am so glad that I randomly ordered this book of Olle Eksell's work for the store. I was charmed by the cover and delighted by the gorgeous drawing inside! Olle Eksell was a Swedish graphic designer, and this book highlights his work in the 1950's.

It is so happy and playful, and reminds me of the work of Mary Blair. So far I have gotten to really sit down and check out the book, but I look forward to that day (because, yes, I stole a copy and took it home!)

Bedroom makeover

So, despite almost no time to work on it, the bedroom makeover is slowly taking shape. I decided on this lovely simple duvet from the Fieldcrest collection at Target. I am normally a fan of pattern in, well anything really, but especially for a duvet cover, but lately I've just wanted clean white. It's like a fluffy hotel room, you know?

We do have some pattern in the room with Vicki Payne's Chippendale fabric though..I mean, you have to have something right?

And I managed to tone down the kelly green-ness of the adjacent room with bunny gray paint.

Lest you think I've lost my love of color, no fear...most of the walls are still a crisp apple green! I hope to have this beast finished by November 12th, so hopefully more pictures will come soon. (By the way, there is no reason for November 12th...I just thought it seemed like a good deadline. We'll see what happens)

I tend to check out Kickstarter pretty often, just to see what people are working on. But I've never been so excited and ready to pledge as I am now. This year is the 50th anniversary of the book, The Phantom Tollbooth and the kickstarter project is to raise money for a documentary on this fabulous book. Sorry folks, we aren't quite done with vacation pictures yet. Here are some from our 24 hours in Paris. We had a sweet little hotel right up the street from the Moulin Rouge. Wood ceiling beams, toile, and tiny balconies--everything a hotel in Paris should have! We used our day wisely, eating crepes, visiting the Sacre Couer, walking down the Rue De La Paix, drinking hot chocolate in the Tuileries and saying Bonjour! to the Louvre.

Maybe next time we'll try to stay a little longer..at least two days!
